New Student Photo Series 2010 â" Entry #3 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Submissions continue to roll in for our new student photo series. If you are an incoming student we encourage you to review this entry for details on how to submit your own photos to display on the blog. The first photos today come from Tamara Tschentscher, an incoming MPA student that will study Energy and Environment. ___________________________ The first picture was taken in South Africa in 2005 during a couple of months of conservation volunteer work. I have always been excited about nature, landscapes and wildlife, but that Summer I entirely fell in love with the African Savannah. This leopard cub with its major habitat in the tree tops was only one of many creatures that were so fascinating. Believe it or not, but the round concrete object you see in the next picture is an improved, fuel-saving and smoke reducing stove in Ethiopia, which may save up to 50% biomass and reduces the risk of respiratory diseases among women and children. Like in many developing countries around the world (especially in African countries), more than 90% of energy consumption comes from biomass. In Ethiopia, the forest cover has been depleted down to 3%, fuel wood is getting increasingly more expensive and erosion more severe. The final picture shows merchants transporting coals and fuel wood across Lake Tana, which often takes four hours or more (one way), to sell it in Bahir Dar. ___________________________ The next two photos come from Katherin McFarland, an incoming MIA student. ___________________________ The photo of the 3 boys was taken in Blue Creek Village, Belize. I lived in Blue Creek Village during my Peace Corps service, and these were three of my favorite boys in the village. They were always willing to laugh and share a smile. The village was a Mayan village made up of about 300 people in the Toledo district in Belize. Pictured From left: Gari Ack, Atley Mas, and Clemento Mas. The photo titled Jankunu_Dancer was taken in Dangriga, Belize. It is a close up of the Jankunu dancer during a cultural day performance. The history behind the Jankunu, (Jonkunnu, John Canoe) stems from West Africa as early as the 1700s. In Belize, the Jankunu dance is typically done by the Garifuna and Kriol cultures. Men dress up in elaborate masks and decorations to represent colonial slave masters. The garifuna drums are played and the Jankunu dancers feet quickly move to and against the beat creating a limber and satirical dance for their spectators.

Mr. Burns is a corporate raider, characterized on the show as being over a century old, putting him amongst the original robber barons.à The character himself is actually based on an amalgam of media magnate William Randolph Hearst and his fictional counterpart Charles Foster Kane, both characters that focused solely on their power and how to use and enhance it.à In The Simpsons, almost every story concerning Mr. Burns includes his blatant disregard for anyone else other than himself and his own interests. One of the most obvious depictions of Burnsââ¬â¢ ethics comes in the two-part episode called ââ¬Å"Who Shot Mr. Burns?â⬠à In the episode, oil is discovered beneath Springfield Elementary School, and the school seems poised to get a windfall of money from the discovery.à This will allow the terribly dilapidated and underfunded school to make many improvements in every aspect of the curriculum.à However, Mr. Burns discovers the oil and creates a slant drilling company that will draw the oil up from an angle, in the process destroying the Springfield Retirement Home and making the popular Moeââ¬â¢s Tavern uninhabitable for humans.à In addition to alienating the school, destroying the retirement home, and putting Moeââ¬â¢s out of business, Mr. Burns also fails to remember the name of his decade-long employee, Homer Simpson. His selfishness and self-absorption have managed to anger just about everyone in town, though he is only concerned with making more money and becoming even more powerful.à He finally reveals his grand scheme to his loyal assistant Waylon Smithers, which is to build a giant device that will block out the sun in Springfield and require all the citizens in town to use electricity from his plant twenty-four hours a day.à He even feels so good that he wants to steal candy from a baby. When his loyal assistant objects, Burns quickly fires him, never realizing that Smithersââ¬â¢ life desire was merely to work for Mr. Burns.à Burns is blind to everything and everyone, and he finally succeeds at blocking out the sun, incurring the anger of everyone in town.à It is when he celebrates his victory he is shot by an unknown assailant, who after a cliffhanger, is revealed to be baby Maggie Simpson as he attempts to steal her candy and subsequently shot by his own gun (ââ¬Å"Who Shot Mr. Burns?â⬠). While the over three-hundred episodes of The Simpsons have many instances of Mr. Burns making ethically questionable decisions in the name of money and power, this episode remains one of the most famous and obvious examples of his selfishness.à To Burns, nothing is as important as his business success, and this is the single factor dictating his ethics and his actions.à Burnsââ¬â¢ morality bleeds into every aspect of his life outside of business, though to him there are no other concerns than business. Morality and ethics are important to every aspect of human life, including in business, and many ethical theorists have sought to understand the extent of morality and the duty that individuals and organizations have to other individuals and organizations.à Though no laws of morality or ethics have been established, there are four core concepts presented by ethical theorists: ethical relativism, which espouses that ethics is a question of individual choice and preference; impartiality, which suggests that humans should treat each other as equals where none count more than others; sympathy, which is the imaginative ability to put oneself in anotherââ¬â¢s shoes; and moral sufficiency, which seeks to answer just how much moral decency is reasonably possible (Gibson 62-63). In business matters, these issues and the questions they pose are even greater, as businesses have the potential to create great benefit for others, or do them great harm, all the while trying to maximize profit and retain success.à Mr. Burns is far from an ethical relativist, for he shows no concern for the benefit of others.à In fact, he takes joy out of creating misery for others, as long as their misery is profitable to him.à He assumes responsibility for his actions without shame, and feels no remorse if anyone is hurt.à After all, one of his greatest desires was to take candy from a baby, for no other reason than he could. In the essay, ââ¬Å"Thinking Ethically,â⬠the authors attempt to apply various ethical approaches to moral issues in business, which could apply to Mr. Burnsââ¬â¢ actions.à One of the first and most widely known approaches is the utilitarian approach, which seeks to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of individuals.à The way to analyze the utilitarian approach is to identify the various course of action available, ask who will be affected by each action and what benefits and harms will come from them, and choose the action that will produce the greatest benefits and least harm (Velasquez 64). Mr. Burns, if anything, purposefully contradicts this mode of action, as he derives pleasure in the misery of those he vanquishes in the name of greater profit and power, even if these people are innocent.à Another ethical approach is the Rights Approach, which espouses that an action is moral as long as it falls within the moral rights of an individual, while the Fairness or Justice Approach which states that favoritism and discrimination are wrong. Or, when he does think about it, he gets pleasure in being able to impose his power to the point where he can bring misery to others through his actions, as in his celebration after blotting out the sun despite the protests of everyone in the entire town, including his closest supporter Smithers. In Donelson Forsythââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"Judging the Morality of Business Practices: The Influence of Personal Moral Philosophies,â⬠he examines the ways business leaders approach ethical relativism and how it does not need to necessarily defeat the moral enterprise.à However, to someone like Mr. Burns, ethics are nothing more than an afterthought, while the bottom line is the only thing that matters. While studies have suggested the impact of relativism and idealism on moral judgment and behavior depends on the nature of the social institution, individual differences in personal moral philosophy suggests that humans will most likely never reach the ideal of complete agreement, but can aim for a fuller understanding of oneââ¬â¢s own and othersââ¬â¢ reactions to various types of business practices (Forsyth 75).à In the case of Burns, he only agrees and appreciates with those that share his views on profiteering and power, even though he remains skeptical and suspicious of every threat; and he considers virtually everybody a threat to his wealth and power. This is why, despite having more money than anyone in town and never being able to spend it all, all the instances when Mr. Burns is asked to contribute even a little of his money to help someone else, he vehemently rejects the request.à This has been seen many times in the show, from Homer asking for help with a sick dog to a girl scout trying to sell Mr. Burns cookies only to have him ââ¬Å"release the houndsâ⬠on her. Mr. Burns greed and complete lack of charity display his true nature as an ethical egoist.à In Peter Singerââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"The Singer Solution to World Poverty,â⬠the author proposes that if people in affluent countries like the United States donated a small portion of their money that would normally be spent on luxury items, then the money can be used to help out poverty stricken peoples around the world. He uses examples of how this can be done, by citing the costs incurred by someone who buys a new television merely to upgrade from an older one.à He claims that if this money was donated to such charities as Unicef or Oxfam America that it would do a greater deal of good for the most possible people, thereby having the greatest utility value.à By choosing to buy the television and not donate the money, Singer feels that a person is making a questionable moral decision, even though few in the situation actually feel this way. Singer uses a more provocative hypothetical example of a man named Bob, who has an uninsurable classic car that he will sell to insure that he has money for his retirement.à In the situation, Bob is forced to make a decision as a train bears down on his car and a little boy; Bob has a choice whether to save the boy or the car, but not both, and Bob chooses the car and lets the boy die.à While this dramatic example seems to highlight the undesirable attributes of self-interest, Singer claims that the ââ¬Å"difference between Bob and those who can afford to donate to overseas aid organizations but donââ¬â¢t is that only Bob can save the child on the tracks, whereas there are hundreds of millions of people who can give $200 to overseas aid organizationâ⬠(Singer). By Singerââ¬â¢s logic, those that are not donating to these organizations are committing an act similar to the one performed by Bob.à Mr. Burns would not only laugh at such a concept, but would relish the fact that anyone asking for help would be suffering.à If in the same situation, he would most certainly save the car, and most likely praise Bob for saving his car, before figuring out a way to get the car from Bob for himself. Mr. Burns utilizes his power to inflict his will upon others, and only respects those who do the same.à As, all humans are born with free will, the decision to be charitable or uncharitable rests within that freedom.à The German Enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant contributed much to the Western discussion of ethics and free will, and his conception of freedom and virtue are reasoned by ââ¬Å"the critical distinction of the two modes of representation (the sensible and the intellectual) and the consequent limitation of the conceptions of the pure understanding and of the principles which flow from themâ⬠(Kant). Kant attempts to distinguish between the empirical and rational conceptions of free will and how it influences virtue, questioning whether freedom is the independent choices of free will or merely the practical reaction to circumstance and causality.à To this end, Kantianism is highly dependent upon reason to figure out the proper decision concerning virtue, and his ethics rely on obligation to reason more than emotions or goals.à Thus, the Kantian approach to donation and charity would be the duty of those that have the means to donate.à Burns would patently disagree.à Most certainly, Mr. Burns is an ethical egoist. Ethical egoism is a philosophical practice that encourages individuals to pursue their own self-interests.à While it is idealistic to think of helping unknown masses with oneââ¬â¢s own hard earned money, it is also naà ¯ve to think that people should feel obligated to do so.à A person who works hard to make money to buy fine things is entitled to those things.à Just because a person is successful and can afford luxury items does not mean that they are obligated to help strangers because it serves some sort of utilitarian purpose.à If anything, much of this altruism merely perpetuates a cycle in which those who are poor become accustomed to the aid of those who are not.à If they pursued their own self-interests, they would be better able to rise above their own struggles and create a successful world for themselves. Ethical egoism is not entirely without the concept of helping others, however it focuses not on people that an individual will never meet, but the people in his or her life and those that the person loves and touches personally.à If oneââ¬â¢s family is in trouble and one possesses the ability to give assistance, this is in the individualââ¬â¢s best interest, as it will lead to happiness.à However, for an extreme example like Mr. Burns, there is no one that he wishes to help, save for the occasional cute pet or his old stuffed teddy bear.à Mr. Burns is a classic example of an ethical egoist, and no one should expect him to do anything for anyone other than himself.à And, in the twenty years that The Simpsons have been on television, he has done nothing but loyally follow his ethical egoist values. St. Thomas Aquinas What is the Best Way to Prove God? A Comparison of St. Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the greatest theologians that has ever been. He recognized that there were some people who doubted the existence of God because, to them, logic did not allow for or explain God's existence. Being a devout Christian, he naturally believed in God, but he wanted to prove God's existence to those who could not accept things on faith alone. As a result, we have five proofs of the existence of God by St. Thomas Aquinas, all of which are based on logic and observation of nature. One of his proofs is based on the idea of a first mover and another is based on the idea that intelligence is necessary to direct non-intelligent objects. I believe that this fifth argument is better that the first. St. Thomas Aquinas' first argument tries to prove that there must be a first mover. He calls this first mover God. He proves this by saying that whatever is in motion must have been put in motion by something else. He then defines one type of motion as the reduction of something from potentiality to actuality, and says that nothing can make this movement except by something that is already in actuality in the same respect as the first object is in potentiality. He goes on to say that no thing can be both actual and potential in respect to the same aspect and, thus, that nothing can be both moved and mover. In this, he means that nothing can move itself. Therefore, if something is in motion, it must have been put in motion by something else, which must have been put in motion by yet another thing, and so on. However, this cannot go on to infinity, as St. Thomas Aquinas explains, because there would never have been a fist mover and, thus, no subsequent movers. This leads to the conclusion that there is a first mover, and this first mover is what is called God. His fifth argument is actually much more simple. Just by observing the world, we see the non-intelligent things always act toward an end. (It is this observation of the universe that is the basis for the sciences, especially the science of physics.) We also see that non-intelligent things cannot move toward their end unless directed by an intelligent being. As an example, St. Thomas Aquinas uses an arrow. An arrow will not achieve its purpose (that of reaching its mark) unless directed to do so by an archer. Obviously, humans are the intelligent beings that direct the small objects of our world, but there must be a greater intelligence that directs the larger bodies of the universe, such as the stars and the planets, since we obviously have no control over them. This higher intelligence is what we call God. These two arguments approach the problem of proving God's existence in two completely different ways. One goes the route of saying there must be something that started everything, and the other says there must be something that controls the things that are here, even if it did not create them. Both of these arguments seem, at first, to be good and valid in their separate approaches. However, the first on does have one major flaw as I see it. St. Thomas Aquinas says that the line of movers cannot go on to infinity, which common sense would tell you to be true. He thus establishes the arbitrary endpoint of God. The problem I see is that this argument could always be tested to be false by asking the question, What Moved God? St. Thomas Aquinas would probably answer that nothing mover God because God has always existed. I personally believe this to be true, but, to prove his first argument, St. Thomas Aquinas must accompany it by another argument that proves God has existed forever. Then, God would not need to have been moved since He would have always been. This would make for a kind of circular flaw in logic or paradox, in that he could not prove God existed until he proved God has existed forever, and he obviously cannot prove that God has existed forever until he proves that God exists at all. Because of this, I do not believe God can be proved by means of St. Thomas Aquinas' first argument or by any similar means. In St. Thomas Aquinas' fifth argument, however, I do not see any flaws in logic and I do not thing it needs to

English is blessed with numerous words to refer to the product of sexual union; progeny and offspring are only two of them. The gen in progeny, like the gen in genital, goes back to a Latin word for beget. Progeny, therefore, is a good all-purpose word to describe people, plants, and animals that are the product of sexual reproduction. Offspring is not so literal a word as progeny; it combines the verb spring with the adverb off. Offspring are what ââ¬Å"jump offâ⬠from the parent. It has a friendlier, less formal connotation than progeny. Compare, for example, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth brought up their progeny according to strict ideas of efficiency. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth treated their offspring to a day at the beach. We speak of babies, children, family, and sons and daughters when we are talking about people in general. In matters of law, the words heirs and issue are used with specific legal meaning. A manââ¬â¢s children are called issue, usually in the sense of children who have a legal right to inherit. An heir is the person entitled by law to succeed another ââ¬Å"in the enjoyment of property or rank.â⬠Prince Charles is referred to as ââ¬Å"heir to the British throne,â⬠but according to the OED, legally speaking, he wonââ¬â¢t be the heir until his mother dies: nemo est heres viventis, ââ¬Å"nobody is a living heir.â⬠Genealogists talk in terms of descendants. Literally the eggs of aquatic creatures, spawn is used figuratively as both noun and verb to suggest that the progeny spoken of is undesirable. Because spawn is frequently used to refer to demons, as in ââ¬Å"hell-spawnâ⬠and ââ¬Å"spawn of the devil,â⬠the word has become popular in the world of comics and novels about the forces of good and evil. As a noun, spawn can refer to any type of progeny that may be seen as potentially as bad as the parent. Financial crisis, the word most mentioned during the last seven years, people may asking about why it take so long time to recover and how many businesses were been affected. There is no exactly number about how many business went to bankrupt, but at least we know that in comparison with seven years ago, the business methods have been changed in order to be more prepared and to survive in the financial crisis. The new financial laws come out in different countries in order to improve their economic growth, because nobody wants to live again the difficult moment as seven years ago. Remembering how the financial crisis started, and how it affected our live style, beside of to know how to prevent it we have also started to learn about the mistakes that we have made in order to not repeat it again in the future. Backing in this case, because we are the main actor who create the financial crisis, and nowadays we are taking the bad consequences about it. Focusing on the business, in the context of economic globalization that we are living nowadays, the impact of the spread of the financial crisis has apparent in different business affecting directly to their business activities as well as investing activities and financing activities. Faced with the financial crisis, companies in the business activities have to reduce inventory, lower their labor costs, strengthen management of accounts receivable, in the investment activities, they have to reduce investment spending to improve capital efficiency, to seize the investment opportunities in order to improve equity investments, and in financing activities, they have to increase the proportion of loans and take advantage of payable accounts. As the Wall Street investment bank giant Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, the US subprime mortgage crisis in evolved ââ¬Å"rare wayâ⬠in the global financial crisis, the world economy has had a major impact. In the context of economic globalization, the companies of different countries have not been spared, the impact of the financial crisis to those companies has become more evident. I will explain in bellow how the financial crisis has affected in different activities in the companies. In this case we can focus on the following factors in order to have a clear analysis. The impact on operating income. There were many uncertainties and potential risks of financial crisis, so that people fear the rise in the degree of risk of future employment status and income expectation. When there is poor earnings expectations, people will reduce unnecessary consumption. The consequences will be that people stop consuming because their future prospects of the financial crisis environment was pessimist, and at same time which caused directly the revenue decline in different business. All those factor contributed the economic decline worldwide. The impact on inventory. From a global market perspective, under the influence of subordinated debt, the developed regions hardest hit, the demand of goods in the business is declining. First half of 2008, affected by global inflation, corporate purchase of raw material prices, freight increase (global petrol prices), leading to increased cost of raw materials companies, resulting in the production of goods and manufacturing costs increase accordingly. Enterprises are in a transition process of inflation and financial crisis, the orders from the raw materials were often low because the increase of the price which cause directly the production and the pricing. And the only answer will be the government decision making, if they made a correct one, it may benefit to whole country, if not, as we have already see with some countries, cut in public funds, as education or health and so on. So in order to make sure that it is not going to happened again, the main recommendation is to start to stablish some specific financial rules for financial entities as well as for countries, make sure everything are under control and once detect again the appeal of other financial crisis, at least they are ready to face it and make sure the economic damage is going to be as low as possible. Human beings develop language, even before actual words are formed in spoken language. From the time of birth, childrenââ¬â¢s literacy is influenced significantly by their family and environment. Their teachers serve as only one influence on the road to developing adequate literacy skills. This term paper is about the factors affecting development: early language stimulation, literate communities and environment; story reading that helps you to know how children acquire language and become literate. It enables you to understand how children learn language, the role of others in supporting this learning, and how a child becomes a reader and writer. Learning language and becoming literate are shown to be social, interactive processes. []In some cases, it also appoints people who live and work with very young children to interact with them in an appropriate way and to provide developmentally appropriate experience to support their development. Therefore, the vital role of others in supporting childrenââ¬â¢s learning is emphasized throughout this term paper. OBJECTIVES * To be ableto acknowledgeand understand these factors affect the language and literacy development of a child. * To be aware of how these factors affect the feelings of the child. * To be able to know how these factors affect the actions of a child as it grow and learn. Children likely to develop literacy skills when the day they born. However, there are several factors that affect a child to develop and master the language and literacy; these some factors are in the following: 1. Children living in poverty One of the most significant factors affecting childrenââ¬â¢s learning and development is growing up in an area of social deprivation. Deprivation has a negative impact on educational attainment. In the long term children who grow up in poverty leave school with fewer qualifications and skills, which in turn affects jobs and employment. Poverty is linked to poorer health and has been shown to have a negative impact on engagement with society; for example, an increased likelihood that an individual will engage in criminal activity.[] 2. Income and material deprivation A low income has been shown to mean a lack access to books, computers, and other reading materials and space to study quietly. It affects the quality of the home environment and neighborhood as low income restricts where families can live. There may be no quiet spaces in which to work to or sleep and this has an impact on emotional well-being. Childrenââ¬â¢s diets may beà inadequate because of lack of money, and poor nutrition can lead to physical changes that affect cognitive ability and performance of the brain. [] 3. Health Low birth weight is more likely in children from lower socioeconomic groups and this is associated with risks to cognitive and physical development throughout childhood. Poorer children are likely to suffer poorer health throughout their childhood, including chronic illness. [] 4. Cultural and social capital, and the experience of schooling Some research has suggested that a lack of social and cultural capital leads to low attainment for children living in poverty. I am suggested that children from lower socioeconomic groups have different background knowledge skills and interests that arenââ¬â¢t reflected in the school curriculum. The differences in cultural capital mean that the curriculum is more difficult for these children to access. The Social Exclusion Task Force reported that young people in deprived communities often lack social capital: access to sources of inspiration, role models, support and opportunity and even those children with high aspirations were found to lack the understanding about what to do to achieve their goals. [] 5. Deficiencies from Inadequate Diets A common problem for young children who do not eat enough meats and green vegetables is lack of iron, which results in chronic fatigue. Serious iron deficiencies lead to iron-deficiency anemia, a common nutrient deficiency. Some children may be malnourished even though they consume enough calories. These children fill up on ââ¬Å"emptyâ⬠non-nutritional calories (such as those found in cookies, and potato chips) and fail to eat enough healthful foods. Undernourished children tend to have stunted growth and delayed motor development. They are also are at risk for cognitive disabilities such asà low levels of attention, learning impairments, and poor academic school-related performance.[] 6. Functional Isolation Functional isolation results from direct and indirect effects of poor environment and inadequate nutrition. Diminished brain from stimulationââ¬âinfluences childrenââ¬â¢s behavior. The children may become more wary, easily tires, less attentive, and less playful, and they rarely show delight and pleasure. Because these children are not very responsive, caregivers do not interact with them much.[] 7. Parents as Teachers Probably the most important one is spending time with children. Although most parents are aware of the importance of reading to their children, not all parents routinely provide this type of experience. Many children are read to very little or not at all, and how often children are read to varies by income level and the race/ethnicity of the family.[] 8. Parent-child relationship This is concerns with social-emotional and interpersonal aspects that relate to literacy practices. The absence of such relationships can be a detrimental factor in a childââ¬â¢s emergent literacy development.[] 9. Parental Characteristics There are two characteristics, the culture, ethnicity and parental beliefs. Culture and ethnicity affects areas such as the expectations for education, the patterns for language use in bilingual families (e.g., primary language used at home, language of the community, bilingual education).Parental beliefs include the familyââ¬â¢s beliefs about the importance and role of the educational system in the literacy development of their children.[] 10. Child Characteristics It include the childââ¬â¢s level of engagement and social interaction in literacy-related activities, as well as language proficiency, cognitive abilities, developmental achievements, motivation, attention, and health conditions that might affect language and literacy development. Each of the child characteristics can influence the extent to which a child can use the support that the environment provides for early literacy learning. For example, the substantial body of research demonstrating that preschool children with language delays are at a significant risk for later difficulties in learning to read indicates that factors within the child can influence emergent literacy development.[] 11. Home LiteracyEnvironment It includes such aspects as book sharing between parents and children, parents reading aloud with their children, print materials being available to the children, and parentsââ¬â¢ positive attitudes towards literacy activities. The home literacy environment is comprised of both direct and indirect literacy-related events. Direct literacy related events are those in which the child engages, such as book sharing with a parent or labeling the printed letters of the alphabet. Indirect literacy-related events are those about which the child learns through the observation of individuals as they engage in those activities (e.g., reading the newspaper, writing notes). [] 12. Teenage Mother Teenage mothers generally have less knowledge of child development than mothers who postpone childbearing. The teenage motherââ¬â¢s lack of general knowledge in child development can affect the childââ¬â¢s cognitive achievement and behavioral adjustment in school. The lack of understanding of development knowledge behavior can affect the language and literacy of the child that may lead to physical and emotional harm. [] 13. Sex Boys are faster than the girls in learning to talk. Compared to girls the mean length of sentence uttered by boys is less. The comprehension vocabulary is also small in case of boys. Boys commit more grammatical errors and their pronunciation is less accurate. Sex differences in favor of girls remain and become quite pounced with every increase in age.[] 14. Intelligence Intelligence plays a vital role in language development. Babbling at an early age is better predictor of child of childââ¬â¢s intelligence. Children of high intelligence show better linguistic competence both in vocabulary, length of sentences uttered and correctness of sentence structure.[] 15. Twins Twins and triplets are slower to learn the language than the single child. Their vocabulary skill is so faster than the twins.[] 16. Bilingual Homes In bilingual homes the child face several problems to the language because the learn more than two languages at a time so it is very difficult to child to remember the two or three languages at a time.[] 17. Language of Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children Children with hearing impairments often do not develop oral language skills as fully as other children do, but they are quite capable of acquiring a language of gestures called American Sign Language.[] But as these factors affect the language and literacy development of a child however there are ways to avoid this if people will apply some circumstances like as the following: 1. Teacher & Parents Parents should promote cognitive development by constructing an optimal learning environment in the home-they provide materials, experiences, and encouragement that help children to become curious explorers of their worlds. When children are exposed to a large variety of learning materials in a safe environment and when they receive encouragement for learning, they score higher on tests of language development and cognitive development than do children with less stimulating environments.[] 2. Story Telling -storytelling to children, exposing the child to different play things, naming the object describing the object.[] 3. Family Support ââ¬â parent(s) and/or primary caregiver(s) provide the child with high levels of consistent and predictable love, physical care, and positive attention in ways that are responsive to the childââ¬â¢s individuality.[] 4. Positive Family Communication ââ¬â parent(s) and/or primary caregiver(s) express themselves positively and respectfully, engaging young children in conversations that invite their input.[] 5. Caring Climate in Child Care and Educational Settings ââ¬â caregivers and teachers create environments that are nurturing, accepting, encouraging, and secure.[] 6. Time at Home ââ¬â the child spends most of her or his time at home participating in family activities and playing constructively with parent(s) guiding TV and electronic game use.[] 7. Early Literacy ââ¬â the child enjoys a variety pre-reading activities including adults reading to her or him daily, looking at and handling books, playing with a variety of media, and showing interest in pictures, letters, and numbers.[] SUMMARY Developing language and literacy in early childhood can be affect by several factors; it can be a barrier or a key to early childhood from successful development in language and literacy. Those factors as barriers that affect the language and literacy development of children are children living in poverty, income and material deprivation, health, cultural and social capital, and the experience of schooling, deficiencies from inadequate diets, functional isolation, parents as teachers, parent-child relationship, parental characteristics, child characteristics, home literacy environment, teenage mother, sex, intelligence, twins, bilingual homes and language of deaf and hearing-impaired but if you sum up these factors the general outcome are family and environment. The family is the first one who will expose the child in language and literacy by teaching them before entering the school and before to interact in other human being while the environment will enhance what information they get from home and will also improve their understanding. But these hindrances can be prevented if the family of the child willing to give them a quality time in spite of many obstructions they has besides it is their responsibility to their children, they should give them a positive communication by talking to them often, reading them a story or giving them an activities that will help to develop their language and literacy. While when the children interact in the surroundings, family should guide them and know the limitation of their child on who they will interact with. Marriage is a covenant where two become one, cleaving to one another. The marital agreement between a man and a woman is a perpetual relationship establishing a covenant not a contract. As written on the Family Life website, Pat Ennis and Lisa Tatlock stated ââ¬Å"A covenant cannot be broken if new circumstances occur. A contract can be voided by mutual consent.â⬠In other words, the bond established by the man and the woman is an ongoing unending commitment to each another. In Gustave Flaubertââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Madame Bovary,â⬠Toni Morrisonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Sulaâ⬠and Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s two short stories ââ¬Å"The Stormâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Story of an Hourâ⬠we see disloyalty, complex love, misery, unfulfillment and importantly, infidelity supposed matrimony. In the story ââ¬Å"Madame Bovary,â⬠Emmaââ¬â¢s marriage is dull and uninteresting, her position as a wife and mother fails to make her happy or pleased. She has affairs with a man, named Rodolphe who is manipulative and seducing, also Leon who is a young musician. After she falls into misconduct she is still yet disappointed and unfulfilled in her desire for a meaningful life. For Emma, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ all the bitterness of life seemed to be served to her on a plateâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Flaubert 62). She was angry and unhappy, with painful emotions ââ¬â trying to fill a void within herself.
